The Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology is a component of the UAB Department of Pediatrics, and the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Division's programs are housed in "The Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Diseases" at the Children's Hospital of Alabama. The Division is a "Blue Cross/Blue Shield Center of Excellence" in the Children's Health System.
The UAB Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Children's Hospital is the state's only comprehensive pediatric center, treating 95 percent of all pediatric cancer and other blood disorders patients diagnosed in Alabama. We are the single largest provider of specialized pediatric services in Alabama for all forms of:
o Cancer/Leukemia o Brain and Spinal Cord Tumors o Sickle Cell Diseases o Hemophilia and other bleeding disorders
The mission of the Division is to improve the quality of young lives and cure children with childhood cancer and blood disorders through excellent care, education, and research.
The Division goals are to serve children and young adults with childhood cancer and blood disorders through the southeastern United States; to give state-of-the-art personalized clinical care to patients; to educate and train the public, families, patients, and healthcare professionals in the care of childhood cancer and blood disorders; and to pursue a clinical translation of basic research focused on childhood cancer and blood disorders. These goals are accomplished with the dedicated efforts of the UAB faculty teamed with an extensive support staff of UAB, Children's Health System, and Children's Harbor employees.
Currently, the 14 pediatric hematologist and oncologist physicians providing care for over 300 cancer and blood disorder patients, ranging from 3 months to 25 years old.
Children diagnosed with brain tumors are treated by Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Team. Childhood brain tumors are the most common solid neoplasm and the leading cause of cancer-related death in children less than 15 years of age. Survival for this group has improved dramatically over the last few decades with improvements in surgical care, radiation techniques and the expanded use of chemotherapy.
Home to the only pediatric bone marrow transplant program in Alabama, as well as the only long-term survivor follow-up clinic in the state.
The Division of is an active member institution of Children's Oncology Group (COG) an international 200 member collaborative academic research group focused on clinical trials in childhood cancer. Recently, the Division has been awarded membership in the COG Phase I Consortium. This prestigious designation is important as the Children's Hospital of Alabama is now one of only 21 COG Phase I Consortium Sites in the United States and allows us to provide novel therapies for children with cancer.
